Domaine de Fontavin
Châteauneuf du Pape, Vacqueyras, Gigondas

Domaine de Fontavin, stretching over 40 hectares in 7 different villages in the Côtes du Rhône (including Châteauneuf du Pape, Vacqueyras & Gigondas), has been described by Robert Parker as an “up-and-coming estate that is resurrected in quality” and that is “making better and better wines with each new vintage.” Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, February 2007 & October 2009.  With a philosophy that focuses on respect for terroir and the surrounding environs and traditional vinification methods, Domaine de Fontavin began its conversion to organic agricultural practices in April 2008.  As part of its transition to becoming a certified organic producer, Domaine de Fontavin now produces its wines with no chemical fertilizers, no synthetic chemical products, no insecticides and no herbicides.  The 2009 vintage is "officially" in transition to being fully organic and the first fully organic vintage will see the light in 2011.  Domaine de Fontavin is dedicated to producing exceptional, top-quality wines, and that dedication shows in the delicious wines offered here.

“Medium red. Very fresh aromas of strawberry, raspberry, potpourri and apricot. Pretty complex in the mouth, with sweet red berry flavors and a suave candied floral quality. A sexy, open-knit midweight that's very interesting right now.”  Josh Raynolds, Intl. Wine Cellar, January/February 2009

“[T]his excellent estate has produced an outstanding example with its blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Mourvedre aged 15 months in tank. The wine is a big, muscular style 2007, but at the same time very seductive due to the exceptional levels of plum, fig, and black currant fruit intermixed with tobacco leaf, licorice, and earth. With plenty of spice to it, this dense, full wine cuts a broad, impressively powerful, yet pure feel across the palate. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.”  Robert Parker, October 2009

“Dark red. Ripe cherry and plum aromas are complemented by dark chocolate and woodsmoke. Supple, moderately concentrated dark fruit flavors are supported by gentle tannins. A peppery note lingers on the finish. Easygoing and drinkable now.” Josh Raynolds, Intl. Wine Cellar, January/February 2009

“[A]n exuberant display of sweet black cherries, roasted herbs, seaweed, licorice, and pepper. Dark ruby, fleshy, and full-bodied, this is a beauty that is already alluring and seductive. It is a blend of 85% Grenache and the rest Syrah from 40-year-old vines, most of it aged in cement tank and the Syrah component aged in smaller barrels and demi-muids. Drink it over the next decade.”  Robert Parker, October 2009
